The ST might be a game changer for crossovers even if it falls short of the dynamic benchmarks set by the Fiesta ST and Focus ST. Judges agreed the ST has speed, power, grip, and sound but not the personality or playfulness of an ST. Not that anyone will take it to the track, but Kim Reynolds nonetheless called it a "lowercase 'st. '" Angus MacKenzie felt the SUV was somehow less than the sum of its parts. It's a great start, Christian Seabaugh said. But it's missing the X-factor that makes other STs so special.

The 2019 Ford Edge is a solid utility vehicle. Ford has done an impressive job updating an aging platform with new tech and, while it falls short of our expectations for the badge, the Edge ST offers a welcome dose of sportiness. This crossover was teetering on the edge of irrelevance, but Ford has brought it back from the brink.

2019 Ford Edge ST First Look: First Performance SUV • 11 January 2018

Ford's new CEO, Jim Hackett, said he is reallocating $7 billion in capital from cars to SUVs and trucks. Some of that spending has gone to the Ford Edge , which gets a significant upgrade for the 2019 model. Ford Performance has its own tough set of performance standards that any vehicle must pass in order to wear the ST badge. One of the toughest ones is braking, and this drove a dramatic upgrade of the system. The rear rotor size is increased to 13.6 inches, and they're vented. The front brake venting design is improved for better cooling, the friction material is upgraded all around, and the master cylinder is revalved to suit the new setup. Improvements in braking distance will be largely attributable to the stickier summer tires, but fade resistance is in another league relative to lesser Edges. The new grille design helps the ST meet cooling requirements, as it flows considerably more air than those on other Edges. The all-wheel-drive system is retuned to apportion more torque rearward more quickly when the performance mode is engaged. Give the stability control button a double-tap and it goes into a much more yaw-tolerant mode for performance driving. Hold it down and stability control switches off entirely, but retains its roll-stability control intervention function. Inside, there's a boost gauge, all gauges get red needles, and there's another curious upgrade: The digital tachometer had to be re-programmed to move faster by eliminating latency. --Frank Markus
