Top Gear: The Top Gear car review. Kia Cee’d. • 14 March 2017

Kia launched this second generation Cee’d in the UK last year. The oily bits may not be all new but there was nothing wrong with them to start with, and the new body and interior on top give it much more appeal against the likes of the Golf and Focus. It isn’t as cheap as it was but Kia hasn’t forgotten we expect it to offer more than the mainstream for less. This one still does.

Efter en halv dag med nya Cee’d är det svårt att sätta fingret på vad som kommer att göra den till en storsäljare, för en storsäljare kommer den utan tvekan att bli. Likt systerbilen från Hyundai har Cee’d ingen unik egenskap som sticker ut eller höjer pulsen. Likväl är det glädjande att Kia har höjt den upplevda kvaliteten, steget upp till de tyska ”premiumbilarna” är nu mycket kort, kanske finns det inte alls. Frågan varför man ska köpa en dyrare Golf blir allt svårare att svara på.

Så länge det är dagsljus och torrt väglag verkar Cee´d vara en riktigt välbyggd och genomtänkt bil. Förarplatsen är trivsam med stora, tydliga instrument, väl uppmärkta knappar och ett multimediasystem som de flesta begriper sig på. De 128 hästarna i dieselmotorn är lite högljudda men gör ett godkänt jobb. Förbrukningen hamnar dock långt ifrån vad Kia utlovar – under testet drog Cee´d över 35 procent mer. När temperaturen faller, solen går ned och vägen täcks av slask, snö eller is visar det sig att Kia Cee´d har fler brister än förbrukningssiffran.

The latest Kia Ceed is the second generation of the car that catapulted the Korean brand into the mainstream. It’s a rival for big-selling small family hatchbacks such as the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra and aims to tempt buyers principally through a mix of keen pricing, low running costs and an unusually long (seven-year) warranty. The Ceed is also generously proportioned, so offers lots of interior space, while it’s stylish inside and out. The model range is smaller than those of many rivals because although there are eight trim levels, there are only four petrol and two diesel engines to choose from. The GT model gives the Ceed line-up a sporty flagship model, but value for money remains key to every Ceed’s appeal and all versions are affordable to buy and run.

Kia’s new 1.0 three-cylinder turbo engine adds efficiency and cuts emissions in the facelifted Cee’d. It’s been a long time coming, but the downsized unit is worth the wait, delivering adequate performance and lower running costs. On top of this there’s also a new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox available in conjunction with the higher-powered 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine. Kia’s also improved the quality and styling inside and out with a few minimal changes and a new sporty-looking trim level – as well as updates to the GT warm hatch – putting the Cee’d back in the running in the family hatch sector.

In case one were needed, the new Kia Cee’d makes a neat barometer for the current buoyancy of the Kia brand. Unlike its predecessors, which were all specifically aimed at undercutting the opposition, the latest model wears a sufficiently large sticker price to be considered towards the top of an incredibly competitive class - and yet the manufacturer expects to sell more of them than ever before. Looking at the car it’s not hard to share this optimism. Like many of its recently launched siblings, the Cee’d is remarkably stylish; more so than the Hyundai i30, even after its recent facelift, that it shares a platform with and arguably more than most of the models against which it competes.
