The V60 Cross Country could well be the pick of the range, so long as you can stomach the premium over regular versions. It does away with any sporting pretensions and delivers what should be a better all-round experience for it, amplifying the easy-going, luxury experience that the standard V60 can do so well. And if you don’t need or want the extra rugged ability, Volvo has enough other options to suit your wants and desires.

Further off-message: Volvo's Pilot Assist semi-autonomous safety system is left off the standard features list. We have zero doubt that the S60/V60 will achieve top safety scores, but we're disappointed that the only standard active safety measure is its City Safety system. As Mark Rechtin points out, Honda has its semi-autonomous safety tech standard on the $23,725 Insight. Volvo should do the same across the board.

The station wagon and the crossover are variations of the same theme. The former is a hatchback with a longer roof; the latter is a taller hatchback with, more often than not, plastic cladding over the wheel arches. The Volvo V60 rides lower than the XC60 , it doesn’t provide the same commanding view of the road ahead, but what you give up in ground clearance you get back in car-like drivability. Then there’s the wow-factor: The V60 stands out in a crowd in a way that the XC60 can’t, simply because there aren’t that many wagons meandering across the automotive landscape. While the Sony Walkman won’t get its hipness back anytime soon, we wouldn’t rule out a wagon revival over the coming years. And, judging by the time we spent in the Volvo V60, early adopters are in for a real treat.

Att nya V60 är en intressant modell är inget att snacka om, och frågan är om inte storebror V90 får ses som en av konkurrenterna trots något större yttermått. Bagageutrymmet lastar endast 30 liter mindre, men i gengäld har V60 en klart sportigare och mer dynamisk design samt en något lägre prislapp. V60 börjar på 317 000 kronor vilket får ses som konkurrenskraftigt men då är det med den lilla dieselmotorn på 150 hästkrafter och med manuell låda. Testbilen, D4 Inscription med 190 hästkrafter och automatlåda, börjar på 405 900 och efter att ha bockat för tillbehören slutar notan på 580 800 kronor.
