The Peugeot e-408 has a smart, high-quality interior, decent practicality and refined, quiet road manners. It’s also very well priced against rivals, yet it doesn’t skimp on standard equipment. However, in a class that’s fast-moving and competitive, the e-408’s official range already trails rivals, including those of the Tesla Model 3 and VW ID 7. Ride comfort, handling and rear head room could be better, too.

The Peugeot 408 is a compelling alternative to the usual family SUV and estate car suspects. It's stylish, good to drive and plush inside, while used prices are becoming increasingly tempting. It's not the most practical option available, though.

The Peugeot 408 might not be the most conventional executive car, but it’s a surprisingly well-rounded package. It has a smart, high-quality interior, a comfortable high-speed ride and a big, practical boot. It’s very well priced against the Skoda Superb, too, let alone premium rivals such as the Audi A5 and BMW 3 Series. Be aware that there are better alternatives out there for carrying back-seat passengers, though, because of the 408’s tight rear headroom. For private buyers, we recommend the Hybrid 145 in entry-level Allure trim to make the most of the keen pricing. The so-so official range of the Plug-in Hybrid 240 falls short of rivals and the lower benefit-in-kind tax bracket, leaving the fully electric Peugeot e-408 a better option for company car drivers.
